5-HTP is a molecule of the [[tryptamine]] class. It is the 5-Hydroxy analog of tryptophan. It contains a propanoic acid group at R<sub>N</sub>, which it shares with tryptophan, phenylalanine and several other natural compounds. It is commonly sold as the levorotatory isomer.
