>McBludgeon m Noted that baking soda helps reduce acidity of final product, and mixing in a blender of the first 3 ingredients works well. |

**Doctor McBludgeon recommends just combining all the cough syrup, ammonia, and naptha solution in a glass blender. I am using an old Osterizer glass blender, and can fit 4-4 oz bottles, ammonia, and naptha that fills it right to the top. Then just blend for about 2-3 minutes. Works fine. And I only let it settle for about 1 minute before I cut the bag, making a small cut to make sure the separation has time to follow itself down the bag(I feel like if it goes too fast part of the ammonia layer rides up on the sides of the bag and remixes into the naptha layer, hardly worth mentioning though. Plus, a smaller cut makes for less loss of the naptha solution when I swap in a glass jar underneath the stream**

*'''The final product, concentrated DXM in lemon juice, is extremely bitter'''. This product will be more easily handled if it is cold, so refrigeration is recommended. It can also help to add 8 ounces of water and a couple teaspoons of sugar to alleviate the taste. Others prefer to reduce the volume as much as possible and "chase" it down, much like an alcohol shot. | *'''The final product, concentrated DXM in lemon juice, is extremely bitter'''. *The final product is quite acidic. I have noticed after continued daily use that my teeth were beginning to become sore, and the dentist said the enamel had worn away a little in a few teeth in the back of my mouth. I'm going to attribute this to the citric acid, because I wasn't eating a lot of sugar or anything else at the time that would contribute to the sores. And they occurred only months of me going back to using the extraction method. I mean, it still could be all coincidence. However, I have found that if you put baking soda into the final mix, it neutralizes the acidity of the solution. I normally make a batch using 4-4oz bottles of Long Acting Cough syrup, so 16 oz. total. I pour the ammonia into each bottle to get everything out, and it measures it out perfectly. For the Baking soda, I use 2 tablespoons for the 16 oz. of cough syrup. Or 1416mg of DXM. I make sure that I boil the solution to about 4 oz., I usually boil until I can tell is less than that and then add enough water to make it up to 4 oz. The baking soda needs a decent amount of water present to react, otherwise it takes forever if you only have like 1 oz. of final solution. I have little 1.5 oz. glass containers (https://www.amazon.com/Hexagon-48-Pack-Spices-3-Tablespoon-Capacity/dp/B015RQ2Q1M/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=1%2Boz%2Bglass%2Bjars%2Bhex&qid=1585541867&sr=8-1&th=1) I put them in, so this works well. But I usually pour the 4 oz. of boiled down solution into a measuring cup to easily pour the solution into the 1.5 oz. containers. I only put one Tablespoon of baking soda into the measuring cup at a time though, as it is highly reactive to the boiled down mix. You will get a large amount of foaming, about 10 times higher than the level in the measuring cup. It helps to swirl the solution around to expedite the process.

A: You've probably used syrup containing guaifenesin- This is the aforementioned guaifenesin forming a oily layer in your mixture. It'll take around an hour or more, but it'll settle out and be fine to use. | A: You've probably used syrup containing guaifenesin- This is the aforementioned guaifenesin forming a oily layer in your mixture. A2: I have found that some ammonia solutions yield a large foamy/sudsy layer and are useless. I was using a generic brand from a local grocery store, but they must have changed their recipe at some time. I now go to Walmart to get their generic brand of unscented ammonia. I just tried it with a Gaufenesin containing syrup and it seemed to seperate fine. That's the first time I've actually tried a syrup containing Gaufenesin though, damn Covid-19 is keeping all the stores around here from stocking in a timely manner.
